This year's title of Newcomer went to Darren Jennings of Atastar Grooming in Bristol, who trimmed a Standard Poodle. In second place was Stephanie Wakefield of Dezynapet, Kings Lynn with a Cocker Spaniel and in third place was Phillippa Brooks of Sophies Groom Room, Cheshire with a West Highland White Terrier.

Another surprised winner was Denise Tawse of Tidy Tykes, Aberdeenshire who won the title of Best City & Guilds Student of the Year. Denise was presented with an Animal Nursing book and a City & Guilds monogrammed briefcase.

Two Groomers achieved their Advanced Grooming Diploma this year and were presented with their Guild of Advanced Groomers plaques, so congratulations on a fantastic achievement went to Richard Barker of Barkers, Essex and Peter Ensell of Mutts, Warwick.

The judges, Tricia McGuire of Canine Cuts, Edinburgh, (Northern Groomers Editor), Joanne Angus of Salon 2000 & Look North Dog Grooming and Ernie Derby, (International & Champion show judge) from Derby. Al l three judges said that they enjoyed the day and felt that the standard of grooming was very good but offer the following tips for future grooming competitions. Take care with preparation of your dogs, ensure that all knots and tangles are removed before the competition and none remain at the end of your trimming. The Cocker Spaniel should have it’s back hand-stripped in an ideal world but have Groomers thought of using thinning scissors to give a more natural finish as against the harsh finish of clippers. To achieve neater appearance on the feet keep the nails well-trimmed back. wpe4.jpg (7371 bytes)

This years championships were held at Richard Barker’s, K9 Care Expo at the Brentwood Centre in Essex and was part of a wider dog activity event. During the day there were Seminars covering Healthcare, Bio Flow, Dorwest Herbs, Shampoos, Homeopathy, Basic First Aid, Micro Chipping and the benefits of good equipment. Workshops covering Cross breeds, Shih Tzu, Afghan, Miniature Schnauzer, Springer Spaniel, Rough Collie, Poodle, Hungarian Puli, Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker.

A Mini Make Over clinic was a first for Groomer of the Year and added a nice touch to the event both groomers and pet owners were able to bring dogs and discuss trimming styles and methods with grooming experts, who were Melanie Winter-Holmes of the Dog Studio and Emma Walton of Look North Dog Grooming.

Salon 2000 Training Centre and The Dog Studio were on hand to give advice on training and qualifications.

A wide variety of trade stands were kept busy all day selling grooming equipment, shampoos, grooming magazines, etc.

wpe6.jpg (7228 bytes) Outside on a bright sunny day were more activities, Good Citizen Bronze Demo Display, Heel Work to Music, Expert advice on behaviour and health, and Agility displays that you were even allowed to join in with your dog.
An exemption dog show also took place, drawing an entry of 170 dogs.
